
The narrator in “The Tell-tale Heart” is an unreliable narrator. The mood is also, as is true in many of Poe’s story, one of suspense. Yet he is arrogant enough to believe he is right. He is excitable because he is mentally unstable. The narrator’s tone is arrogant and excited. He hears the heart twice, immediately before killing the old man and when the police are investigating the crime. In the “Tell- Tale Heart” symbolizes the narrator’s guilt. The heart symbolizes the emotional center of the individual. So, the beating heart symbolizes the narrator’s conscience, or his sense of guilt and wrongdoing. The reader is led to believe it is the beating of the old man’s heart he hears, which is impossible, since he is dead and in pieces.Īs he recounts the tale, the beating heart starts only after the crime has been committed, and gets more and more intense the more he tries to confidently deny his crime.
